Computer Accounts at The Graduate Center

Revised Fall 2005

The Office of Information Technology provides computer accounts to all Graduate Center students, faculty, and administrative staff.

  • Matriculated student accounts are created automatically within 72 business hours of registration
  • Permit/Non-Matriculated students must visit the Help Desk to request an account

(NOTE: A valid GC ID card and a Banner ID number are required)

  • Faculty accounts are requested by the Provost’s office
  • Staff accounts are requested by memo from a supervisor
  • Accounts are activated as soon as they are created


Computer Account Information

Usernames:

  • Are composed of the first Initial of the first name plus the last name, i.e. gwashington
  • Usernames are not case sensitive
  • Common usernames have a number added, i.e. gwashington2

Passwords:

  • Length may be from 8 to 15 characters long.
  • Passwords are case sensitive.
  • Expires 180 days after it is changed.
  • New passwords must be different from the three previous passwords.
  • Must include 3 of the following 4 character types:

1. Lower case characters (one or more from a to z) 2. Upper case characters (one or more from A to Z) 3. Numbers (one or more from 0 to 9) 4. Special characters (& or # or $ or @ or % or other characters)

  • Initial login passwords:

Students: capitalized initials plus date of birth; i.e. GW1972/11/07 Faculty: Faculty/GC5 Staff: Staff/GC5 Note: Please change your password as soon as you successfully login

Domain:

  • Computer accounts are in the ACAD domain of the GC network

E-mail Service And Storage:

  • All users receive a GC e-mail account along with their GC computer accounts.
  • E-mail addresses are formatted as follows: username@gc.cuny.edu, i.e., gwashington@gc.cuny.edu
  • E-mail quotas are as follows:

50 MB for students. 50 MB for faculty 100 MB for Central Faculty 100 MB for Research Center staff 150MB for staff

  • As you approach your mailbox limit, you may be unable to send and receive messages. Please remove attachments from e-mail messages, and archive or delete unneeded Sent Items to minimize your mailbox size.
  • Users will receive warning messages automatically as they approach their mailbox quota.

Files and Folders Storage:

  • All users receive a U:\ drive, a GC network drive for storing files, along with their GC computer accounts
  • U:\ drive quotas are as follows:

500 MB for students 500 MB for faculty 500 MB for staff


Computer Workstations

Students:

  • 58 Dell OptiPlex Pentium 4 Windows XP computers with DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives and 250MB Zip drives and 6 Apple iMacs on the Concourse level of the Mina Rees Library
  • 74 Dell OptiPlex Pentium 4 Windows XP computers with CD-RW drives and 250MB Zip drives on the 2nd floor of the Mina Rees library
  • Student computer “hubs” in academic program offices have Dell OptiPlex Pentium 4 Windows XP computers with CD-RW drives and 250MB Zip drives and laser printers available for student use.
  • The DSC (Doctoral Students’ Council, http://dsc.gc.cuny.edu) computer hub in room 5487 has eleven Dell OptiPlex Pentium 4 Windows XP computers with CD-RW drives and 250MB Zip drives as well as a laser printer available for student use.

Faculty and Staff:

  • Dell Optiplex Pentium III and Pentium 4 Windows XP computers at desk/office


Printing Services

Students:

  • Hi-speed HP 4300 laser printers with duplexing (double-sided printing) on the Concourse-level and 2nd Floor of the Mina Rees Library.
  • Hi-speed HP 4050 laser printers, some with duplexing (double-sided printing), in student computer hubs in academic program offices and the DSC computer hub, room 5487

Faculty and Staff:

  • Hi-speed multi-function department-class network printers in academic and research center offices and local printers in some offices


Personal Laptop Connectivity

There are several hi-speed Ethernet-based (wired) Internet connections available on the Concourse-level of the Mina Rees library for use with laptop computers equipped with Ethernet network cards. These connections provide Internet access only; they do not allow access to GC printers or U:\ drives.


Remote Access to the GC Network

Virtual Private Networking (VPN) enables GC users to establish a secure connection to GC resources over the Internet. A high speed Internet service is required. Free software and step-by-step instructions are available at http://web.gc.cuny.edu/informationresources/vpn. VPN software enables users to: o Search all Mina Rees Library databases including Elsevier journals, Project Muse, American Chemical Society Journals, RILM, Grove’s Dictionary of Art and Dictionary of Music, and many others. o Transfer files to and from U:\ drives. o Access the T:\ drive (used by faculty for academic instruction).

o Provides Internet-based access to selected GC classroom applications including Matlab, SPSS, SAS, Mathematica, and many more through a web browser o Provides full access to Mina Rees library databases without installing VPN.

o Provides a location for students to create and store personal websites, provides Internet-based file storage and e-mail token-based secure files sharing with any user across the Internet
